President George Washington authorized the construction of Cape Cod's first lighthouse here in 1797-the tower of the Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse. But over the years, the waves of powerful winter storms have battered the base of this cliff. It’s my understanding that since the original building in 1797, the lighthouse has been moved at least twice because of the eroding sandy cliff below it.

Of the ten acres originally bought to build the 1797 lighthouse, fewer than four acres remain.

George Bernard Shaw said, “I can think of no other edifice constructed by man as altruistic as a lighthouse. They were built only to serve.” ‘Love that quote!

I think this may be the largest watercolor I’ve painted since my personal challenge began in 2017. The approximate framed out size of this painting is 22 1/2” x 25”
