Special thanks to my niece for giving me permission to paint her photo of the Nubble Lighthouse in York, ME. In colonial days, mariner traffic was important to the commerce of the east coast. Knowing that Maine’s rocky coast was very dangerous to those mariners and their livelihood, the citizens petitioned the United States Government to build a lighthouse. In 1874 President Rutherford B. Hayes appropriated the sum of $15,000 to build a lighthouse on this “Nub” of land in Maine. On July 1, 1879 construction was completed on what, at the time, was dubbed as the Knubble Lighthouse. Once the Lighthouse Service completed their work, the United States government transferred this service to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939. The Coast Guard gave Nubble Light the official name of Cape Neddick Lightstation. Nubble Light was completely automated in July, 1987, but between its birth in 1879 and 1987, there were 30 light keepers. Very interesting history. The approximate framed out size of this watercolor is 17 1/4” x 20 1/2”
