See The Process

Many years ago, I realized that even my abilities in art are God-given. For that reason, you will see somewhere on my paintings, “…to the glory of God”. I am merely the paintbrush in the hands of the Master Artist.

About Me

Born in East Tennessee in 1950, I enjoyed the instruction and encouragement of my artist father. I began by sitting on his lap, holding his paint brush as we would “work together” on a design.

During my years in high school art, a teacher turned my ambitions toward art education.

Many of my paintings represent some of my favorite locations in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, my home, where life is still simple and everyone still knows most of their neighbors. But the main thing I’d like to convey in my artistic career is the fact that I’m just an instrument in the Master Painter’s hands. I want God to receive the glory for all the artwork I’m able to produce. Without the ability that He’s given me, I can do nothing. Therefore, you will find written somewhere on each of my paintings, “…to the glory of God” so that credit goes where credit belongs.

I earned my Master’s Degree in Studio Art from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, then retired from BJU in May of 2012 as Chairman of the Department of Art Education. Most of the paintings on this website are a result of a personal challenge, began in 2017 to accomplish one painting per week. My personal challenge has continued through the present date without missing a week.

How it All Started

The first art I remember doing was in the first grade. The subject matter was a 3/4 view of a log cabin, where you could see the log ends interlocked. I was just drawing-that’s all. But my first grade teacher said it was special, and posted it on the front of the classroom door. That was such an encouragement that from then on, all I wanted to do was draw. Fast forward around 11 years to my high school years, when Mr. Don Hilton, my high school art teacher inspired me, without knowing it, to become a teacher of art. I reached my goal, and retired in 2012 as chairman of the Division of Art Education at Bob Jones University in Greenville SC. In 2017, I challenged myself to accomplish a painting per week, and to date, I haven’t missed a week.
